Ever wake up swollen and not know why?
By Wicked Won
Waking up feeling swollen is something I used to do regularly. My hands would start swelling sometimes during the day. I could feel the swelling as it happened in my hands. What I have figured out is kind of a duh moment to some people but it was a revelation to me. The swelling is directly because of the food I eat. Here is the cycle of swelling symptoms I experience from what I eat. I eat what I am not supposed to, for me that is too much salt. I do not mean I pour salt on the food I eat. I mean I eat a can of tomato soup with crackers or have pizza night with the family. For me within four hours I am swollen starting in my hands. Becoming swollen may not actually start in my hands buy that is where I most notice the swelling. I really start to feel funky, you know jut drug out and ugh. Depending on how much salt I eat the swelling can last a few hours or a few days. The tomato soup and crackers is a few hours, a major binge on pizza night causes me to be swollen for days. Eventually the swelling will break like a fever. I can feel this happen sometimes. I will urinate much more often when the swelling breaks. Remember being swollen is actually extra water in you. Then I always notice a marked upswing in my physical energy levels. My hands look slender to me every time the swelling goes away. It took me many years to associate being swollen with the food I eat. For a long time I thought my hands would be swollen from the pounding they got working, you know using a hammer or power tools. Like I said it was a duh moment when I put together why I was swollen. What I have learned is salt will sneak into what I eat in funny ways. Herbs and Spices that are premixed typically use salt as the first and largest ingredient. Pizza always has salt, cheese and sauce only is not as bad. Canned soups in general for whatever reason have a lot of salt. They do make canned food with no salt added. They do make no salt added food with salt in it. The real keyword is added, not salt in this instance. Restaurants add and use a whole lot of salt. The only way to keep from becoming swollen is to read every label for food I eat.

This is excellent intel. I am sure a lot of folks will find it eye-opening. I would like to add that switching to a salt-free diet is easier than people might think. For different reasons, I switched my two toddlers (and myself) to a salt-free diet two months ago. It made no difference whatsoever to their appreciation of the food. After just 3-4 days, I got used to it too. If I eat out these days, I wake up the next morning with a terrible feeling in my mouth.
